Subject: FW: 25th anniversary of the intervention in Grenada

To the representatives of the 75th Ranger Regiment Association,

Please find the forwarded conversation I have had via email with Philip
Wolcott, OSD, DMDC.

Mr. Wolcott has information for the families of fallen soldiers from the
mission in Grenada; an event which occurred 25 years ago this October.

A representative from the university in Grenada communicated through the
US Diplomatic Mission there that they would like to pay for an immediate
family member of each of the fallen to attend the ceremony to be held
this October.  Mr. Wolcott requires assistance in contacting the
families.

I know the 75th Ranger Regiment Association has close contacts with the
Regiment, and may advance this dialogue  I encourage you to communicate
directly with Mr. Wolcott, and of course, maintain all due consideration
for the sensitivities of the families of the fallen as this coordination
advance s.

Thank you,

Kurt Sturr

CPT Sturr,

First of all - Thank you for your service. Please, also thank your
family from me and my family for their service and sacrifices.

I read about the downing of your CH-46 and surrounding accounts, I
appreciate hearing from you directly about this and your other
experiences. At this time, I may be the only person to make contact with
about this other than the University; I do not know yet if there will be
an official U.S. Military representation. I hope there i s and will find
out to let you know and put you in contact with those who may be working
on it.

I was contacted by the US Diplomatic Mission to Grenada who was asked by
the University there to help locate the immediate family members of
those US Service Members who were lost to us in that action. This will
be the 25th anniversary and the Universary planned a special memorial
service; they would like to pay for an immediate family member of each
of the fallen to attend so that they may be honored and remembered.
Unfortunately when hurricane Ivan hit Grenada records were and the
University was unable to locate the families to invite them directly. I
hope to find each one or at least learn that someone was able to contact
each one.

Once I've located, or hear from, a family member I provide the
University's contact information and a copy of the invitation from the
University but must leave it to each family to complete the circle. M y
understanding is that all US Service Members who participated, and their
families, are especially invited to attend. While the University has not
offered to pay for anyone beyond an immediate family member for each of
those who died, I know they would be very pleased to have you, your
family, and anyone else who were there to participate.

You have already contacted the University so you do not need that
information from me.  Let me know if there is anything else you need
from me on this other than whatever information I can learn about
official US Military participation and events or plans in addition to
the University's services.

If you know and are in contact with any of the families who lost someone
would you contact them and let them know about the University'e offer.
Please provide them with my contact information and I can provide them
directly or through you with a copy of the University's invitation.

Tha nk you for your email, don't hesitate to write or call me if you have
questions or if there is anything else I can do.

-Philip

Subject: 25th anniversary of the intervention in Grenada

Mr. Wolcott,

My name is Kurt Sturr.  I was an Army Ranger - a Sergeant in Company C,
2nd Ranger Battalion, 75th Infantry during the rescue of students from
the university in Grenada in 1983.

A friend passed along your note (below) to me.

I made the parachute jump onto Point Salinas runway on 25 October.  I
was on the CH-46 US Marine Corps helicopter that was downed in the surf
near Gr ande Anse.  I was on the first lift of eight Blackhawk
helicopters into Calviginy Barracks where we lost three helicopters, and
suffered three rangers killed from my unit, and more wounded.  Those
events still evoke powerful, emotional memories for me.

I am now retired (as a Captain), and still serving my country as a
contractor for the US Army in Iraq.  I am in Baghdad as I type.

Each year, as late October draws close, my thoughts return to my combat
experiences in Grenada.  I would like to return, and revisit the sites
that I saw 25 years ago, this time, greeted by friendly faces instead of
bullets.

I am making tentative plans, and know of at least one other ranger who
will be visiting.

Please let me know if any official U.S. Military representation is
planned for the ceremonies in Grenada, as I would honored to
participate
.  I have already made contact with representaties from the
universtiy, a nd will inlcude their campus in my visit.

Finally, if you are not the appropriate recipient of this query, please
forward it to the person or office that might be best suited.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Kurt Sturr
