Noble Cox <nob1@hrtc.net> F 52nd LRP I Co. 75 RANGERS INDIANA, USA - Sunday, December 24, 2006 (posted by Regenthal-- with permission) Mrs. Seadoggie says ... Thanks, gentlemen, for sharing your memories of Bill (Round) and for your kind words. I know he could be ... ummm ... difficult, shall we say? But he valued and respected all of you as Ranger brothers, despite his caustic, cranky, cantankerous old self. In keeping with his wishes, Bill will be cremated. His ashes will be scattered at sea, off the coast of Texas. This will probably take place in the spring. We aren't planning any other service at this point, but I'll keep you posted. I would like to purchase a brick in his name at the Ranger Memorial ... can someone tell me how that works? Who do I contact? Do they let you know in advance when it will be installed? That was the nice part of what I have to say. This is the part where I open a can of verbal whup-ass and get all up in your faces. If the doc tells you to quit smoking, cut out the caffeine, get some exercise or what-the-f-ever, DO IT, goddammit. It's complete BULLSHIT for you to kill yourself, and THAT'S WHAT YOU'RE DOING. Yeah, I know ... you're big boys and it's YOUR life and yakketyyakketyak, but think about the people who love you and GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER, for chrissake! Making your family watch you destroy yourself? WTF? Over. It was very well done and I thanked those from the city who got it done. I was able to introduce myself to Ms. Roy Boatman and told her that the 75th Ranger Regiment wished her well. She asked if I served with Roy and I told her that I knew him from the Association, but would have been honored to serve with him. Ms Boatman then hugged me and said "I've lost both my boys". We hugged for a few minutes and I told her that she had a whole association of men who were now her boys. She thanked me and introduced me to her daughter-in-law and grand-son. I'm glad I went because she was a part of the ceremony but her burden was great as "she'd "lost both her boys". Thought you'd like to know . . . "Preacher" Rollins <cal-rollins@sbcglobal.net> E20-C75Th Rangers ARKANSAS, USA - Tuesday, November 14, 2006 The Ranger Flag was dedicated and is standing in the Chapel at the Middletown, Ct national cemetary. The ceremony was very nice. Everyone that came got a carnation. The Commissioner spoke and all of the military groups got up and placed their flag in the chapel. Then they said, "now we have a very special dedication by the Gold Star Wives. A representative, Kathleen Cardona Blamire is dedicating the Army Airborne Ranger Flag in honor of her husband, Ronald William Cardona who was a Charlie Ranger." I was flaberghasted. I placed the flag and went back to my seat. Then they brought out an empty wreath. They said that it was to be filled by the carnations that were given to us, symbolizing our thoughts and prayers. It was a very moving ceremony. Then they did the rally, and we took the wreath out to the memorial site to place it. Then another rally and taps. Afterward, we had cookies and coffee. It was truly lovely. And of course, this was all during the thunder storm. What an experience. I only wish some of you had been there with me. It was a proud day. Thank you for the opportunity. Co. 2nd Plt 3/75 COLORADO, USA - Thursday, September 28, 2006 September 26, Osprey Publishing is releasing Shadow Warriors: A History of US Army Rangers in paperback. Written by Mir Bahmanyar, a former US Army Ranger, Shadow Warriors was hailed as “a hard-hitting history which is a ‘must’ for any serious military history bookshelf” by the Midwest Book Review. I think Shadow Warriors would be a great read for members of the 75th Ranger Regiment Association The US Army Rangers have a storied and celebrated history of illustrious successes and ample controversy. In SHADOW WARRIORS, former Ranger Mir Bahmanyar traces the development of the Rangers from their formation in the French and Indian War through their pivotal involvement in the global war on terrorism. SHADOW WARRIORS examines operations in Panama, Somalia, Afghanistan, and Iraq, intertwining the experiences of courageous Rangers who endured unthinkable odds in combat. These accounts, which include a vivid first-hand description of the doomed 1993 Operation Gothic Serpent in Somalia and a heroic narrative from the perspective of a platoon sergeant in Operation Iraqi Freedom, reveal the human cost of war and immerse the reader in the chaos and carnage of a battle zone. Illustrated with color and black and white photographs, maps, and diagrams, SHADOW WARRIORS provides rare insights into the ways that Rangers have employed discipline, prowess, rugged individualism and fierce camaraderie to overcome their enemies. As the Rangers contribute to the ongoing efforts in Iraq, SHADOW WARRIORS honors their unparalleled service to our nation and illuminates how the US Army Rangers evolve to address the challenges of 21st century warfare. I never served with Roy in the "company", as many of us of our individual ranger company their are periods where we all have our time or era that we served. For many years when the Association first started I was contacted by Roy and we exchange letters, articles and of course names. But never met, at that time I was still on active duty and not until I retired from the Army and made to my first Ranger reunion in Columbus that we link up. When I first stepped into the hotel doors I was greeted right off by Roy's command present with a firm hand shake and a big smile. Like the awesome professional NCO he is and always was, he gave a frag order on the events, took me under his wing and gave me a cardinal direction, and introduce me to members of the old company from different era and sister companies. It was like being excepted by the company once again and like I never left the rangers. Dick Myers <dmyers@wolves.k12.mo.us> C and D Co, 75th Rangers MISSOURI, USA - Wednesday, August 30, 2006 Passing of Roy Boatman Roy Boatman passed away in July of 2006. He had just turned 60. People traveled long distances to attend his memorial service. That in itself is testimony to how well he is remembered. That a soldier's life is hard on a soldier's family was one message that came through the many tributes paid to him. Nonetheless, his family esteemed him most. A sister described the boy who became the man. In so doing, those who knew him as a soldier heard about the man in the boy. Roy Boatman was not a sports figure who earned millions, but he will be soon in the Hall of Fame. He was not a great scholar, but he was a teacher who influenced every generation of Rangers from his own time forward. Many of those served in attendance at his funeral. There he lay in a casket embraced by the only flag on earth that stands for something beyond a symbol of national sovereignty. It also represents an idea, one that quietly announces to eternity that to achieve liberty is rare and the cost to keep it measured in the lives of extraordinary men like Roy Boatman. His family followed the casket out of the chapel with dignity. They took their place in the front row for the convocation. A Ranger Honor Guard signaled taps and then sharply rendered the 21 Gun Salute. The flag was carefully removed from the casket, ceremonially folded by the Rangers to the tricorner as is our custom, and handed to the widow by the Sergeant At Arms. The service concluded. Most of us start and will finish our lives as ordinary men, some more ordinary than others. Roy Boatman started as a man who became a legend for the way he lived, and the legend became an idea. In the Mythology of the ancients, Gods, mortals, and great heroes made their way across the river Styx to the underworld. We can picture Roy at the crossroads where the mortal world meets the immortal at the entrance to Elysian Fields - only legends pass over to that side of the river. Roy: we are sad you are gone, but glad you were with us . . . John Puzzo <j.puzzo@comcast.net> K/75th Rangers, 1970 CONNECTICUT, USA - Wednesday, August 23, 2006 Fellow Rangers/Brothers, I'm sorry to hear of Roy Boatman's passing. I had a chance to meet him the short time I was involved with the association as UD for 1st/75th. My sincerest condolences to his family, and I thank God and the Big Ranger in the Sky, for Men like Roy. God Bless. Always a Ranger!! RLTW, Jim Kinney C Co. 1st/75th Ranger Bn. 1978- '80 Opn. Eagle Claw James P. Kinney <jklk175@verizon.net> NEW JERSEY, USA - Tuesday, August 22, 2006 Joyce, I'm so sorry about Roy's passing. I haven't seen you all in 3 years. You know he was loved by all in the Regiment and SF. I certainly loved him as a man and a Ranger. We have a history-you, Roy and I and Mary dating back to housing, reunions and just talking over at your old house. We love you both, please except our condolences. John and Mary Starnes 180 Bienville Drive, Fayetteville, NC 28311-cell 1-910-728- 0022. I've been out of town for a year now in the U.S.Merchant Marines. John Starnes <starnesjb@yahoo.com> NORTH CAROLINA, USA - Wednesday, August 16, 2006 I saw your site and I am looking for anyone that was in Nam in 69-70 with the 173rd or has a friend that was there. We ran convoys over there, also was in An Khe. Lacy L. Shepherd <banjoman 253@hotmail.com> 173rd Airborne S&S Co. NORTH CAROLINA, USA - Sunday, August 13, 2006 I wanted to write and thank each and every one of you for your unfailing support and caring expressed while we all coped with the loss of our brother, Roy. I truly meant and still mean it when I say he was every bit as much your brother as he was mine, Faith's, and Tom's. The loss we share is great but so is the love. The words spoken both in private and in public will be held close to our hearts. I cannot help but think of those grandchildren sitting listening to what you all had to say at Roy's funeral. Over the last nine months while trying to come to terms with the loss of Roy's beloved son and our nephew, Darrell, reading that others also saw what we, his blood family, saw in Darrell that made us love him has been such a comfort -- a source of pride. I thank all of you for giving that gift. You have given those grandchildren a lasting legacy -- the knowledge that their grandfather made a difference. I also want to thank you for the laughter. You Rangers lifted our spirits at a time when you all were feeling your own sense of incredible loss. This too is a gift that will not be forgotten. For those who could not be there physically, we know you were there in spirit and your presence was certainly felt-- just as when you all meet at your next reunion, you will not see Ranger Roy Boatman sitting there but you will surely hear his laughter in your minds and hearts. With much gratitude and respect, Elaine Elaine Westmoreland <elainencarolina@aol.com> NORTH CAROLINA, USA - Tuesday, August 8, 2006 Dear Mrs. Boatman- Although I did not personally have the pleasure of knowing your husband, Roy, many of our members, including our founder, Daniel Pope, were very close to him and friends with him for many years. We are all very glad that he is now in a better place even though we will all mourn his loss for many years to come. It seems unfair for you and your family to have suffered such great losses in such a short time and we offer our heartfelt condolences as an organization of Roy's Ranger brothers. We are proud of the work Roy did in helping to establish the 75th Ranger Regiment and most proud of the exceptional record of service to his country. We also remember Darrell and honor him in the same manner, and are so very proud of you and your family. Please know that all of you are in our prayers and that we honor you by honoring Roy's memory. Rangers Lead the Way John Eder <jeder@nts-online.net> President, 2005-07 Echo LRP/Charlie RGR Assn., Inc. TEXAS, USA - Monday, August 7, 2006 Roy Boatman died of a massive heart attack on Wednesday night, July 26th just three weeks after his 60th birthday. He was returning from a play with Duke and Marion DuShane, Roy Barley and his wife and Joyce. Roy was in great spirits, cracking jokes and having fun with people. It was a nice production and was enjoyed by all. Roy's humor shone thru the area and people that he did not know were cracking up at comments he made after the show. On the way back to the motel Roy's hands slipped off the wheel. Roy Barley managed to right the car in its lane and turn off the ignition. Attempts were made to revive Roy by Duke and Roy Barley. A nurse and a police officer showed up almost immediately and took over resuscitation. He was taken to the hospital but further attempts to revive Roy were unsuccessful. He did not suffer and did not linger. Roy served twenty years in the United States Army retiring as a Master Sergeant. He served four tours in Vietnam, two with November Company Ranger, 75th Infantry, one in Special Forces and one with the Infantry. He was awarded four Purple Hearts, the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars with "V" Device, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Air Medal with "V" Device. Roy served five Presidents of the 75th Ranger Regiment Association for over eleven years as the Association Secretary. Roy's son Darrell was KIA in Iraq last November and another son, Ronald, died some years ago. He is survived by his wife, Joyce, three daughters, two sons and thirteen grandchildren. He is also survived by his Ranger Family and many other military friends. The family has asked, in lieu of flowers, that donations be made to 1st Battalion Memorial Fund, c/o Shiela Dudley-Boatman Fund, 108 Salisbury Road, Savannah, GA 31410. Roy was a great Ranger and a great friend. He will be missed by all. Stephen C. Roy Barley <Lordshill@aol.com> - Friday, July 28, 2006 I would like to express my condolences to Roy Boatman's wife Joyce and the entire family. I have known Roy for 20 years, he was not only a friend, but also a mentor. In 1993 when I was the project officer in USASOC which came up with the request to change the regulation, to incorporate a retroactive award of the "RANGER TAB" for the Vietnam era LRRP/LRP/RGR & BDQ's wartime service. It took 9 months of research to develop the document which was approved by the USASOC Commander, GEN Scott and USSOCOM Commander, GEN Downing. Without Roy's extensive historical knowledge it would of taken a lot longer, Needless to say the Regimental Commander who took GEN Grange's position , who was the one who wanted the units recognized , would not support it. So the document was given to the 75RRA, and in my mind, I would of had every member submit the packet to their congressman and let 300-500 congressman take on the RTB or whoever and I feel it would of been changed in 1994, Roy's extensive work in the forming and developing of the 75RRA has gone unoticed, for some reason. It saddens me most that he wasn't selected for the RHOF this year, I know he would of died, a happier man if that would of taken place. MAYBE NEXT YEAR !!! 1SG Joey "Brasso" Welsh USA (Ret) <brasso9@peoplepc.com> TEXAS, USA - Friday, July 28, 2006 It is with a great deal of sorrow that I must inform everyone of the death of one of our members who dedicated a great deal of time, effort and expertise to this Association. Spend most of the day daydreaming about the good old days...yet by July of 1966 we had two scouts killed and many wounded...I choose to thing of them alive and never have been killed. Often wish those that were drawn to conducting long range patrols would gather in the central highlands of Vietnam along the triangle area each year at this time. I have read the area is reforested and little damage is noticeable. Have a base camp setup with G-11 parachutes erected to cover the eating areas, conference 'rooms', and sleeping areas. Mosquito nets and cots. Not certain best way to address sanitation...depends on number of PAX and if families were part of the group. Plotting our routes on maps and aerial photographs and hiking along the border...it is steep in many areas and hopefully still a 'no mans land'. Probably best to select a month that is not likely to expereince heavy rains. Beautiful place, I miss it and the scouts that accompanied me. Any interest in organizing a trip in this area amongst the LRRP/Ranger community? Include the NVA troops that we engaged? Have seminars on the history, geography, etc of the area and also intelligence information on the NVA units in the area...main CP areas, equipment, morale, answers to the EEI and OIR that we were to gather??? A two week trip with one week used in travel and visits to cities of interest, including the beach at Bong Son, etc? An advanced party to go over first and get everything up and running...I would prefer coleman lanterns vs generators at night...the sound of the jungle during the day and night is something that I would like to re-experience. Of course a moratorium on mud slinging and who was the best. Or if we have that much competitive drive, then a best ranger competition with orienteering course... We are all looking forward to having you as a member of our Association. Gene Tucker <egt12@adelphia.net> COLORADO, USA - Tuesday, June 20, 2006 Late in 2005, myself and a Ranger Buddy, both RVN veterans, had been looking at WW 2 Ranger unit sites and determined there had not been many recent accolades concerning Major William Orlando Darby, one of the greatest soldiers the U.S. Army has ever produced. We consider him to be "The Founder of the Regiment" and very much responsible for the current makeup of the 75th Ranger Regiment today. On that basis we designed/cast a Challenge Coin to honor Major Darby and the WW 2 Ranger units. The Ranger Battalions had many great CO's, Rudder, Schneider, Mucci, being examples. We selected Darby as he was the first. Side 1 of the Coin - Honors Major Darby and the 1st ,3rd and 4th Ranger Battalions, commonly referred to as "Darby's Rangers". Another name was the "Ranger Force"... Side 2 of the Coin - Honors all WW 2 Ranger units in the ETO and PTO. Several have already been placed at domestic and foreign locations significant to individual Rangers known to us, Ranger History and buds that were KIA in various AO's. A coin has been placed at the site of the memorial to Major Darby in Italy where he was KIA. The entire design of the coin was our concept/artwork. It is 2 inches in diameter. A complete description of the coin and pictures can be forwarded via e-mail or hardcopy post. We currently have 19 coins in stock. The standard retail price for a coin of this size and material is $20. They are $10.00 each and we cover the S & H. Once these are sold I will have to order in a minimum lot of 100. If an entire lot of 100 is purchased the cost is $8.50 per coin, prepaid, and we will again cover the S & H. It takes about 2-3 weeks to restock. We are willing to work with on a price for an entire lot. We have already sold coins to the RTB at Ft. Benning, the WW 2 Ranger Battalion Association and many single coins, etc. References can be provided if requested. We desire no personnel profit. Any cash generated will be rolled over to a limited production coin honoring past and current selected individual members of US, Foreign Military and LE SpecOp Units. Once those coins are produced any further cash generated from the sale of the Darby coins will be donated to charities relevant to the military, the War on Terror, etc. Contact me at my listed e-mail address. I ran with "Mad Dog", Jim F., Ken Perry, Fred Hardman, Jerry A., "Navy", Pat Mac, "Bart", Eck, Drew, Fenner and all the rest.... The best to you all wherever you are... Robert E. Memorial Day is also a day to look to the future. We must understand that our armed forces are again fighting for our freedom. The survivors will return home wondering why they were spared while some of their friends were not. This is an irrefutable fact of combat, but we must be ever mindful that it is this sacrifice that has preserved this nation and the ideals we treasure. I was a U.S. Mairne, forward observer, from the 3rd Battalion, 11th Marines and was assigned to support the 37th ARVN Rangers on at least three operations in and around the Da Nang TAOR, from Sept 1967 to December 1967. I recall working with RANGER Capt. Siebert, 1stLt. Stan Broadka, SFC Willard Langdon and of course Capt. Hoang Pho, the ARVN 37th Rangers CO. I am trying to fill in some holes for my RTO, Lance Corporal Mark Tamkus, USMC, (later Sergeant) who was wounded by small arms fire during a sweep near Hoi An on Sept 16, 1967 (the operation lasted from Sept 15-17, 1967), a few too many years have flowed by since then and the memory is not as sharp as it used to be. A name Ballistic Charge or Ballistic Charger keeps coming to mind, but when searching I find only references to a U.S. Marine Operation in Quang Nam Province conducted by the 1st Batallion, 3rd Marine Regiment. Any help would be tremendously appreciated. Doyle Sanders, GySgt., USMC (Ret.) Doyle Sanders <GunnyD@swbell.net> Tulsa, OK USA - Friday, January 20, 2006 at 14:26:01 (EST) Just Checkin' in. My opinion the story was put together very well and displayed the extreme hardship of the POWs and the Filipino Resistance after the fall of Bataan. The drive of the men of the 6th Ranger Battalion and the Alamo scouts to get their own people back. That type of spirit still lives in our Regiment and our creed today. I had several Uncles that served with the Filipino scouts during that war and survive the Death March and later died in the POW camps and some that escape to continue to fight on with the resistance until US forces returned. My Father was a member of the US 1st Filipino Infantry Regiment under the US 6th Army and my Mother was with the resistance on Leyte until the liberation. I have been told at very young age the horrors of war from their eyes and later learn for my own as many of you have. I recommend those that haven't seen this movie even tho it wasn't rated very high (that's Hollywood) can relate to Rangers of WWII, for those who served in Ranger units from then on to the present Regiment. Would like to thank Jim and Frances Nutter from Brooksville, OH, Tom and Robi Eckhoff from Richfield, MN and Herb and La Vena Reichel from Lee's Summitt, MO for letiing me spend a night or so along the way. It's always good to be among Ranger Family. I'd spent a couple of months in North Dakota where I am from originally and it was good to experience the cold winters again. Of course I knew I would leave after the first of the year so it was bearable. One evening it did drop to -16 and a stiff wind pushed the temp to near 30 below. That was the night my hair froze to the sleeper compartment wall. After adding some insulation and an extra heater all was well. I plan on traveling to the Missisippi. Louisiana area after the first of Feburary so if there is a Ranger family in that area that could use some help with a project of two just email me, I'd like to be of some help if possible. Read some of the post about the 11th ACR not having a LRRP Unit. Hahahahahahahhaha. Yes they did have a LRRP Unit wether anyone wants to admit it or not. They were damn good also. The reason why thebecause Col G Patton Jr. Didn't want to lose operational control of them. They stayed LRRP and ARP and were Totaly volunteer. Normaly had a 1st Lt or Cpt as a platoon leader. I was a crew chief on a slick and we used to haul these guys out. They went to school somewhere to be a recondo and were constantly cross training with ROKS and I remember hauling a bunch down to Vietnamese Airborne school where they did everything in like three days instead of three weeks. The guys that don't think these guys had a tough job and were not trained to do it are delusional. While assigned to the cav we were attached also to the 1st cav for a time and we hauled the cav Lrrp's out on the some occasions or extracted them and it was in the same areas the 11th cav guys went into.
